My mission statement

The times we are working in now need a great deal of accelerated change and there must be no negotiating that down. So my mission statement for this part of my consultancy career is to be clear that there needs to be and will be a lot of change from the work that I do with individuals and organisations and if organisations don’t want that, then it is probably best to go somewhere else.

How commissioners can develop new value with the NHS

This morning I will be on the platform at the beginning of the National Association of Primary Care’s (NAPC) conference talking to one of the two GP organisations that have helped develop GP led commissioning. I am one of four speakers speaking on the theme of “Transforming the NHS”. Unfortunately for the NHS, transformation is a topic that has been much discussed but rarely put into practice. Fragmentation was built into the delivery of the NHS from its inception. That is why it finds creating strong patient pathways so very hard.

There are many conservatives resisting NHS reform who sincerely believe that recent reforms (and for that matter those of 2001-7) have fragmented what has always been an integrated NHS. For them the reason the NHS finds integration so very hard is because all these reforms have introduced fragmentation through relationships such as commissioning and competition. On Labour’s plans for Reorganising NHS Commissioning.

A report in the Guardian last week explained how some Labour Party policies that were announced at the Labour Party Conference were developed.

Before the Conference I commented on the difficulties that the Party front bench had got itself into by saying it would repeal the Health and Social Care Act of 2012. Understanding how Francis might understand the world of the NHS

A few weeks ago we learnt that the publication of the Francis Report on Mid Staffs will now be put off until January. In the interim there have been some concerns shared within the NHS about how the report might understand its world.

Delivering health care through a variety of different channels

Last week I chaired the afternoon session of a conference organised by GovNet. The conference was about increasing healthcare efficiency through technology.  As I commented in my talk technology promises a lot of savings for healthcare but whilst it delivers improvements in care it has rarely delivered the savings it has promised, and what we need now is a lot of efficiency delivery – not promises. More long term realism about the ability of the British economy to grow

There is a growing realisation amongst senior managers in the NHS that the future level of NHS resources are inextricably linked to the ability of the British economy to grow – or not. There is also a tight political boundary drawn by the fact that I cannot see any political party standing on a platform of charging for NHS services and winning general elections in 2015 and 2020.
